"Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, The fruit of the womb is a reward. 4 Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, So are the children of one's youth.” - Psalm 127:3-4
Psalm 127 is the shortest psalm in the bible, but when applied it stretches out to be the longest, from generation to generation. Today the youth and young adults seem to be leaving the church in droves, leaving the aisles and pews with many gray heads. Now there's nothing wrong with older folks in the church, however when they are the overwhelming majority it can be a sign that a church has lost touch with today's younger folks. I believe the problem lies in the home for much of what we see today (or don't see) in the church. I believe that the youth have lost touch with Jesus because parents have lost touch with Him first. That is many parents are not clinging to the cross and putting God's word, fellowship, and family as the priority in their lives.
Psalm 127:3-4 gives us some significant insight into the solution to this problem. We must understand that our kids and youth "are a heritage from the Lord" [inheritance or possession] and as such we are accountable to the Lord for them. Every parent must also understand that they are "warrior[s]" and therefore constantly engaged in warfare against the enemy for our children's hearts and minds. We must pray for them diligently in our war rooms. And lastly children are "like arrows in the hand[s]" of warrior parents. Our job is to aim our little arrows (and grown ones) to the bulls eye, Jesus is the target! The occupation of every parent is to listen to the voice of God and teach their children how to listen to the Voice as well!
Being a parent doesn't stop till we stop kicking. The responsibility to our children begins in the womb and ends in our tomb!
