"And when the Philistine looked about and saw David, he disdained him; for he was only a youth, ruddy and good-looking. So the Philistine said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. And the Philistine said to David, “Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field!” Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you and take your head from you. And this day I will give the carcasses of the camp of the Philistines to the birds of the air and the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. Then all this assembly shall know that the Lord does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the Lord’s, and He will give you into our hands.” So it was, when the Philistine arose and came and drew near to meet David, that David hurried and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine. Then David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone; and he slung it and struck the Philistine in his forehead, so that the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the earth. So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him. But there was no sword in the hand of David. Therefore David ran and stood over the Philistine, took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him, and cut off his head with it.And when the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled." -1 Samuel 17:42-51
Now ladies before you bail out on me here. I know the phrase "be a man" isn't a politically correct one nowadays, but it is biblically correct, and it does find it's meaning in the scriptures. Paul said in 1 Corinthians 16:13 "Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong." (ESV) This phrase isn't directed to men or boys alone but to Christians in general--men and women, boys and girls. While it is true that some Bibles render this part "be courageous" or "be brave", literally it says "BE-MAN-izING" or "be-ye-being-manly". To be a man here is to be valiant as a man prepared for battle. This verse is to pump up and encourage all Christians men and women to rise up for battle and to face their giants.
As we see here with David and Goliath.
Speaking of being men, verses 45 to 47 always make my eyes watery when I read them. I don't know I guess it's the bravery of the underdog and the total reliance he has on God. That is something to marvel at and to strive to practice ourselves. We need courage guys, the days are darker than before and the return of our Lord is closer than before, let us take advantage of every opportunity to stand for Christ and not to waste them by letting them pass us by!
David was manly regardless if he was a scrawny and a hairless pretty boy. He stood for what he believed in and that made all the difference. You see the problem I see today amongst my fellow brethren is that we want God to win our battles but we won't step in the battle field. Listen the just shall live by faith, God is gonna win the battle, but you gotta step out in faith, God won't show up if you don't. How can God defend someone who keeps running away, or ignoring the problem all the time? Faith is not limited to mere belief but it is manifested in action. So TAKE ACTION, BE A MAN- BE COURAGEOUS..and God will bless it! "the battle is the Lord's" but if we don't take action how will we experience victory? Own your giant, be a man, and just as "David prevailed over the Philistine" so will you over your giant!
