"..Mary, ..sat at Jesus' feet and heard His word. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving," -Luke 10:39-40
Read Luke 10:32-38 to get the whole picture. This is a passage of scripture that every servant of the Lord should take to heart. It started with Martha inviting Jesus over to her house (and disciples). What would you do if Jesus was coming over to your house? Would you start cleaning? Redecorating? What would you cook for Him?
Luke reveals that Martha was busy serving in the kitchen baking for the Lord all kinds of stuff. The word "distracted" here literally means "to be pulled about in every direction"
Martha was over occupied with serving while Mary was occupied with Jesus. Martha was trying to feed Jesus while Mary was being fed by Jesus.
Martha and Mary show us two attitudes; one that can possess us and one that we can possess. Being at the feet of Jesus and serving are both necessary things but if you neglect one for the other, or if you put serving above spending time with the Lord you will burn out. We see this with Martha, she allows herself to be over occupied, she complains about Mary, and she tries to boss Jesus around. You see Martha opened her home but Mary opened her heart. We can grow weary in the work of Christ but we should never grow weary from the work of Christ. We should never be too busy that we fail to spend time with the Lord and allow him to work in and through us. The reason many Sunday workers and volunteers burn out is because they serve in the church but fail to actually come to church.
