“But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us.” -2 Cor 4:7
There is an overflowing inherent power inside of us - the glory of God - that comes from Christ and not ourselves. We are but “earthen vessels”- jars of clay, fragile cracked pots made of earth. We are but baked dust holding this immense treasure of God’s truth and glory. Our weak bodies are perishable containers of the awesomeness of God. The truth is that we are privileged dirt. We are made from dust and to dust we return. (Gen 3:19) But why does Paul share this truth with us? Could it be because we have a tendency to become entitled, self-righteous, and proud people?
In order for the gospel of God to be best seen in our lives we must be reminded of the fact that we possess “the power” of God but we don’t produce the power of God. To be an earthen vessel means that apart from Jesus we are just empty vessels. He is the one that fills us, and no matter how much we adorn ourselves on the outside with etiquette, style, degrees, and achievements, inside we are still jars of clay. To be a clay jar means that we were made to hold something, our very existence was never meant to be devoid of something but full of Someone. I’ve learned that Christians can either be full of themselves or full of Christ, I choose the latter. May God get the glory in all we do and may you be full of Christ today and not of yourself.
