“..forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead,” -Phil 3:13
There were two ways Paul’s past could prevent him from being the person God wanted him to be in the present; Guilt, if he looked back at the past and thought about how he persecuted the church - led many to their deaths, and to blaspheme the Name of Christ, (Acts 9:1-2, 26:10-11) he would be filled with guilt and unworthiness. Glory; if he looked back at the past and thought about how well versed he was in the law and among the Jewish elites, he would become proud, arrogant, and entitled, and this would disqualify him from being used by God.
If you keep seeing yourself as the person you once were you will continue to trip in your walk. If Christ has forgiven you but you can’t forgive yourself you will not receive the love and grace of God properly, hindering your ability to function in the present. We should learn from the past and we should grow from the past, but we should never live in the past! Glorying in the past is like bringing back up the glorious burger you had for lunch. It was good going in when you were having it, but it just doesn’t have the same taste anymore coming out.
We must live in the present because yesterday’s glory will not do, get yourself a new burger. Forget about the past, own up to your present, and your future will prosper!
