“Foods for the stomach and the stomach for foods, but God will destroy both it and them. Now the body is not for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.” -1 Cor 6:13
The Corinthians thought that because they had natural urges for food and sex that those urges must be naturally satisfied as they arose. Food is good and necessary but it must be given its proper place among believers. Sex is good but it must be contained to the marriage bed between husband and wife. Outside of these protective barriers is when it becomes sin. Gluttony to food is like sexual immorality to the body, both are sinful. And this is what Paul was trying communicate to these carnal people. As spiritual people we can no longer live as if the greatests things in life are to satisfy our appetites - edible or not.
Esau, Isaac’s eldest son and Jacob’s brother, sold his birthright for a bowl of chili (stew). In reality he forfeited Jesus because Jesus - the godly line and seed promise came attached to the birthright that is the Messiah would be born through his line of descendants. Esau is seen as a worldly man who even though was part of a godly family he himself was very carnal and put the desires of the flesh before spiritual growth.
Likewise as members of God’s family we cannot meddle with our old appetites and expect to be ok with God. No, my body is now the Lord’s, therefore my appetite should be for the Lord. The spiritual should take the priority in our lives. So I plead with you not to forfeit Jesus for passing pleasures, because one day this body will be done away with and Jesus will be our all in all.
