“Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their masters, As the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress, So our eyes look to the LORD our God, Until He has mercy on us.” -Psa 123:2
Patience is not something we are born with. Patience is an acquired taste - something we must learn and develop in the Spirit. In this busy world patience is just not something we care much for; we want the barista at starbucks to hurry up with our drink, we want the slow snowbirds to get out of the fast lane, and we want the Sunday preacher to hurry up and get it over with.. etc etc. We don’t want to “waste time” waiting on stuff, we want it now. However a big part of prayer and our relationship with Christ is to wait on Him. There is a time to plead, a time to petition, and a time to press on the Lord’s hand. But after all of this we must then wait on God.
Psalm 123:2 tells how we should wait on God. We must wait on God as good and faithful servants not demanding or losing our patience with the Almighty. Think of a waiter at a restaurant he or she is there to serve you by waiting on you. Initially the waiter will take your order, then leave and come back with your food, then for the remainder of your time he/she will be watching from a distance being at your beck and call. The waiter will come not only when called but repeatedly throughout your time with there. Likewise we are God’s waiters and as we wait on Him we must continue to serve Him by coming and going and looking out for His hand to move. Indeed to wait on God is not merely to draw away but a time to come closer and closer.
