"[Jesus] rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself. 5 After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet,.." -John 13:4-5
Jesus told us that He came to serve not to be served. And He showed us what He meant in this by washing the disciples' feet. Jesus the highest of highest left the glory of Heaven to put on humanity, and He gave Himself as a the lowest of servants. The New Living translation puts it like this, "He gave up his divine privileges; He took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When He appeared in human form" (Phil 2:7)
By looking at the footwashing in the upper room and looking at the men whom Jesus humbly served. We can come to the conclusion that service is not dependent on the receiver, whether they deserve to be served or not. In all actuality we don't deserve a thing and we are not entitled to a thing on this earth or hereafter aside from God's wrath. Service is about love and Jesus loved them all therefore He served them all to the end. As believers we are not greater than our Master (Jesus) therefore we have no excuse to not serve others. Whether they be thickheaded hesitant believers like Peter or backstabbing hypocritical church members like Judas, we must serve all for the sake of love and for the sake of Christ. Service and humility is about denying ourselves and about casting aside any preconceived ideas that we have about ourselves or some position in the church or outside of the church. It is about being more like Christ, and Christ was made a humble servant before He was raised up in glory with the Father again. Greatness comes in humility and love comes with a basin and a towel.
